I realize that a six year old computer will have a difficult time running the latest OS. In anticipation of the the day that OS 10.5 is issued, I'm strongly considering buying a new computer. However, does anyone have any guesses as to what the minimum requirements of 10.5 will be?

I am guessing it will be needing a 600MHz+ G4 CPU (or 700Mhz G3) and 512MB ram MINIMUM! probably a 32MB VRAM Video Card, and at LEAST 12GB of disk space.
What facts are you basing that off of?
Probabilities, it will most likely have the same system requirements of 10.4, but have separate requirements for some of the added bloat. Expect to see features that will only be visible on certain machines. It'll most likely run poorly on machines slower than a 1.25 ghz g4. Also, expect to see a requirement of 512mb of ram or more. I would say that support for PowerPC machines will mostly be discontinued around 2012/2013. This is based on Apple's obsolete/vintage listings.
Anything with a G4 processor (700 single, 500 dual), 512MB RAM, an AGP video card, and enough HDD space will probably run it fine. Core Video probably won't look good on anything less than a 1.25GHz G4 with a 64MB video card, though.
He said "Guesses" I think they won't be leaving the G3 out of the system just yet. Only the low end systems (below iMac DV (later version)
I still hold on 32MB of Video, because that would lock out pretty much any White iBook. Since they only have 32MB of VRAM, they would have an awful lot of ****** people on their hands
