Ibook trackpad issue...

OK, here's the deal. My brother-in-law has an ibook 500mhz--dual-usb, you know the drill. He called me and told me that his trackpad is acting up--it was just shooting to the left for no apparent reason, and it was clicking on things. We figured out the clicking--it was just a Sys Prefs setting issue--but the erratic cursor behavior still goes on. Apple discussions suggested resetting the PMU--which we did. The process they named didn't even reset the PMU (Date and Time stayed the same, etc.) Here are my questions:

1) Does the Apple instruction on resetting the PMU hold water, or is there another way, and
2) Does anyone here have experience with the erratic trackpad problem, and how do you fix it?

I--and my brother-in-law--will greatly appreciate any assistance that can be given.

Thanks everybody!

bad hobbit...

hey there, try the following:

1) do what apple told ya... know it sounds silly, but i guess they have described the following: shutdown your book, press the power manager button (it's near the audio jack), wait a few seconds after starting up your book again.

if that's no cure to your disease:

2) Try with battery or power adapter use only
3) also try to startup from cd.

if none of the mentioned helps, then i guess you're in big trouble. that means swapping the upper case (or, if you can manage it, the trackpad only) of your book against a new one...

cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion...

As I said, we already tried the PMU reset--three times, to no avail. I told him to try the above mentioned variations. Hopefully, something will work. On the subject of replacement, where is the best place for finding take-apart manuals for iBooks--preferrably free? I feel pretty confident that I could replace the upper case, but I obviously would love to have a step by step from the horses mouth.

That'll do...

Thanks so much, coius. That sight will definitely do the trick. Now, on to find a nice used upper!
