This LW12/640 receives the print queue, the pickup roller activates, picks up the sheet but then stalls and a second motor is not activated and I get the yellow jam light. From what I have learnt it could be the solenoid that activates the main motor: how can I test?

Can you find the Technical Procedures manual for the printer? The manuals for earlier LaserWriters (I, II, and the Personal LW) were published as three volumes of ring binders as document PN 072-0163.
There are also diagnostic programs that can be run on a Mac or a TechStep that will report the exact reason that the printer stops with a fault light. For the earlier printers, there was one program called "AppleCAT".
They describe the functions of solenoids in the printers. A solenoid is an electrically operated mechanical actuator. It does not turn motors on or off (since that can be achieved by simply applying power to the motor) but they are used in printers to drive clutches and shutters. Most often this is used to change the direction of feed (to use the face-up feed tray, for example) and to start the paper feeding into the toner cartridge.
the service manual doesn't say anything, I am going to take it apart although getting into the rollers system is a nightmare...
