I need to meet someone who owns an Apple II gs computer, living in Quebec, Canada.
I am based in Sherbrooke, which around 100 miles southeast of Montreal.
What I exactly need, is to transfer some data from a 5.25" disk that I have programmed a good while ago. I was programming stuff at school when I was 15 years old, and now the disk is 16 years old, it was never put in a disk drive since. I hope the data is ok, it should be.
I just want to "immortalize" the data by transferring it to PC format, using ADT120 software. That's why I need the gs model, because it has a serial port I can hook up my laptop to it. I read enough on this on the internet, I know what to do, I just need an Apple II gs in working order. I know that this could be done by shipping the actual disk, but I would prefer to do it myself, just so I can brag about it.
I don't want to buy the Apple, just want to use it. In exchange, the Apple II gs owner will have my eternal gratitude, for all it's worth, and who knows, we could end up being best buddies in the world! (maybe I'm pushing it a little bit)

I don't have an Apple IIgs, but I believe an Apple IIe with SSC or CFFA 3000 card will be able to handle the disk transfer that you're looking for.

A //e with an SSC should indeed be able to do this transfer just as easy as a IIgs. It just requires a different cable. DB25 instead of a Mini-8. For that matter a ][+ or clone with an SSC or a //c with a DIN-5 cable would also work just as well.
You're also correct that using a Flash device like a CFFA3k or something similar is an even easier way to get stuff over to a modern computer either PC, Mac, etc. Other floppy emulating devices that would work fine would be FloppyEmu, wDrive, UnisDisk, SDisk ][, etc. Even hard drive emulators like Dan ][, Booti, A2IO-RPi, etc. Copy the files or a disk image to the flash media and then transfer it to other format with various tools like AppleCommander, CiderPress, etc.
Also possible to do it with something like a Uthernet card in the Apple ][.
Lots of ways to do it. Many of them don't require hooking up serial connections at all.
You're right. There are many other options available. I forgot the sd based emulators. I have a FloppyEmu.
It would be much easier than trying to setup a transfer using SSC with a serial cable.
